Looking at the respective league positions it was Biggleswade (1st) who would of been the hot favourites for the local derby game against Bedford (17th) on Tuesday evening but a strong hard working performance from the visitors showed they are a team and club going in the right direction despite losing 2-1 to the table toppers.
Biggleswade FC had won their previous two games 8-0 (v Codicote) and 7-1 (v Chesham United Reserves) so were in fantastic form going into this game. Bedford FC played really well sitting back when it was required and pressing in the right area when the home side had the ball. The game got off to a dramatic start when Bedford had to change keepers on 18 minutes when James Woolf came off injured to be replaced by outfield player Tyrone Kelly who did really well for the rest of the match and can be very proud of his performance.
They home side took the lead shortly after via Lee Northfield with what was their only real chance of the half. On 74 minutes Lewis Jones equalised for Bedford when he found himself unmarked in front of goal and finished well. Almost immediately after this Tom Cookman scored the all important winner with a tap in from close range when the ball broke for him – Cookman was really fired up when he came on and put in some strong but fair challenges.
Bedford got the ball in the back of the net with a fantastic header following a good diagonal ball into the box to the delight of the travelling supporters from McMullen Park only for the goal to be ruled out by the Assistant Referee’s flag for offside – I was down the other end so it’s difficult to see from the camera angle although reports from those nearer is that is was a very close decision.
Biggleswade FC tweeted ‘In the grand scheme of things tonight’s three points may be the most important as Bedford FC were outstanding and never gave us an inch’ which neatly sums up the game. In a quirk of the re-arranged fixture list the reverse game takes place on Saturday at McMullen Park. I would say this was one of title favourite’s toughest games of the season so far.
